Principal’s Welcome Message

PRINCIPAL'S WELCOME MESSAGE

On behalf of the stellar educators and staff at UMC High School who year after year help make our students realize their dreams of outstanding achievement, I would like to welcome all of you to what will surely be another exciting and rewarding year at the school.

This year, we give you the same promise and commitment that we have provided to the many thousands of students who have attended UMC high school for the last 20 years who went on to accomplish great things upon graduation.

It is said that time is so vast and infinite that it is inconceivable that all could but grab more than their share of it, yet so fleeting and finite that it is a foregone certainty that none could ever secure enough. Likewise, choosing the right high school and the right high school education could be an opportunity that may come and go long before it is ever seized.

That is why we want to commend our returning students for making that consequential decision already and it is why we congratulate our new students for making the right choice of becoming UMC High School students this new academic year.

We believe that with the help and guidance of our dedicated educators and staff, all of whom are professionals of the highest caliber combined with your effort and determination to succeed,  the possibilities to achieve are endless and your future bright.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

THE IMPORTANCE OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Character development at UMC High School is about helping students learn and practice positive character attributes. When we build good character, we build strong communities. In the school community when character development is woven into programs and practices it becomes a way of life.

Student success is dependent on a safe, caring, and inclusive learning environment where all students feel valued. This starts by teaching our students about the value of character – respecting themselves and each other, making positive contributions to their school and community, and thinking critically and creatively.

Teachers are role models for students and can provide examples of good character every day in the classroom. Students notice what teachers, do, say, tolerate, and how they handle challenges.

THE PURPOSE OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

  • Develops the whole student.
  • Contributes to a healthy, safe, and orderly school environment.
  • Creates a collaborative school where teaching and learning can be the focus.
  • Provides high expectations for learning and behavior.
  • Engages students in their learning.
  • Is Universal.
  • Is Respectful.
  • Strives for an ever-growing depth of self-awareness, self-discipline, and understanding.

PILLARS OF MONTHLY CHARACTER

It has been said that character can be measured by what one would do if no one were looking. True character is instilled at a deep level so that positive behavior is automatic. The Josephson Institute of Ethics defines the main pillars of character to include: trustworthiness, responsibility, respect, caring, fairness, and citizenship. Courage, diligence, and integrity are also sometimes included.

  • January – Integrity
  • February – Courage
  • March/April – Inclusiveness
  • May- Empathy
  • June – Resilience/Perseverance
  • July/August – Citizenship
  • September- Respect
  • October – Honesty
  • November – Responsibility
  • December – Co-operation (through Kindness and Caring)

PARENT ACCESS SYSTEMS

STAY CONNECTED AND INFORMED

Stay connected and informed! At UMC High School, we want to encourage all parents to be a part of our student’s education every step of the way. With our parent access systems, you can easily catch up on your child’s class assignments, check out grades, attendance, and discipline.

INTRODUCING PARENT ACCESS SYSTEMS

To improve learning experiences, UMC High School uses online learning platforms – Schoology & Maplewood in our middle school and high school. These two online learning platforms are designed as powerful tools to provide an efficient way to pull together information about students, courses, grades, attendance, and report cards in a clear format.

SCHOOLOGY – ACCOUNT SETUP INSTRUCTIONS

Let your regional counselors or student advisors know you are interested in seeing your child’s information online. Once you are properly identified, the access ID and password will be provided to you. The Maplewood system will allow each parent to check their child’s attendance, timetable, marks, and comments from teachers, and transcript summary. Please refer to the below instruction video on how to set up your Maplewood account.

MAPLEWOOD – ACCOUNT SETUP INSTRUCTIONS

Contact our regional counselors or student advisors for the Access ID & Password, in order to create your new account. This feature of the Parent Access System will allow families to track the progress of their child’s work, see course material, student work, marks, and feedback. The instruction video of how to set up an account has been posted below and on our YouTube channel.
