UMC BEAM PROGRAM

We provide students a rare opportunity to be part of an elite Business Program, something not offered by other high schools. BEAM stands for Business, Economics, Accounting, and Marketing. Our aim is to provide interdisciplinary education and prepare versatile and fully-rounded leaders of tomorrow’s world.

Our “prep program” is ideal for students pursuing careers as varied as accounting and law, marketing and psychology, management and information technology, finance and banking.

University/College Application Prep

One-on-one universities/colleges application counselling and assist students in choosing the most suitable program.

University-Level Learning

UMC provides university-level learning, combined with business simulation workshops.

Business Clubs/Contests

Some examples of our contests include: Striving for Competitive Advantage, Enhancing Knowledge Economy, Pitching Realistic Marketing, Lateral Thinking, and Health and Wealth of Nations etc.

Elite Business Prep Program

Daily 45-minutes BEAM Session for developing a Capstone Project (CP).

Small Class

No more than 15 students at a time. This means the teacher will work one-on-one with each student to develop essential skills, such as research, oral presentation, and communication, and creating business plans.

COURSES

Students in the BEAM Program will earn up to 6 high school credits:

  • This course will allow students to explore the decisions that individuals and institutions, including governments, make in response to economic issues such as globalization, trade agreements, economic inequalities, regulation, and public/private spending. Students will apply the concepts of economic thinking and the economic inquiry process, as well as economic models and theories, to investigate, and develop  informed opinions about, economic trade-offs, growth, and sustainability and related economic issues.
  • This course will provide an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy and explore the factors that influence success in international markets. Students will learn about the techniques and strategies associated with marketing, distribution, and managing international business effectively. This course will prepare students for postsecondary programs in business, including international business, marketing, and management.
  • Students will focus on the development of leadership skills used in managing a successful business. Students will analyse the role of a leader in business, with a focus on decision making, management of group dynamics, workplace stress and conflict, motivation of employees, and planning. Effective business communication skills, ethics, and social responsibility will also be emphasized.
  • This course will connect legal theory and economic reasoning which will allow students to create new research agendas in the fields of behavioural economics, public choice theory, business law etc. Students will further explore a range of contemporary legal issues and how they are addressed in both Canadian and international law. Students will develop an understanding of the principles of Canadian and international law and of issues related to human rights and freedoms, conflict resolution, and criminal, environmental, and workplace law.
  • In this course students will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills that will assist them in future studies and/or career opportunities in business. Students will acquire an understanding of accounting for a service and a merchandising business, computerized accounting, financial analysis, and current issues in accounting.
  • This course will further develop students’ understanding of the fundamentals of accounting by having them examine each component of the accounting cycle, with an emphasis on a merchandising business. Students will use computer applications software to learn how accounting is practiced in the workplace. Students will acquire an understanding of payroll systems, inventory, specialized journals, subsidiary ledgers, income tax reporting, and budgeting.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Prospective students will have an Entrance Interview with our Department Head. (If a student is selected for our elite program, a BEAM Portfolio will be created and developed in order to track student’s progress.)
  • Students must submit their transcript before the Entrance Interview.
  • All prospective students must meet language proficiency requirement for this program: they must be in ENG2D or above; or they must have a minimum IELTS score of 5.5.

*Due to the space limit in our BEAM Program, there is no guarantee that the student will be accepted after the Entrance Interview.
