UMC High School is a ministry inspected (BSID #888748) and one of the best private high schools in Canada. We have met all inspection requirements to be given the right to issue (OSSD) Secondary School Diploma credits. All of our high school online courses follow the Ontario Curriculum.

Students in Canada and abroad are able to earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) completely online through UMC Virtual High School. In order to obtain an OSSD, students are required to earn a total of 30 credits, complete 2 credits of online learning, complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), and complete 40 hours of community service hours.

No. All credits earned through UMC Virtual High School are taken at the same value as a credit earned in any other school in Ontario. Students are encouraged to always consult with the admission office at university/college to check their policies.

Our teachers are  a diversified mix of  Ontario certified teachers and highly experienced  and specialized educators in their respective fields of the Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Mathematics and the Arts. They provide full attention and care to the learning and wellbeing of our students at all times. 

UMC Virtual High School course teachers are available to students via the online platform – Moodle. There is a built-in communication tool within the learning environment that students must use. Any questions that you have about your marks, textbook or course concerns can be sent to your instructor. He/she will be happy to provide you with guidance and support. Once you complete your registration, you will receive a welcome email containing all the information you need to get started (i.e. how to log in, course structure, etc.) from your instructor. It may take 1-4 weeks to process your registration, and provide you with a clear course starting date.

UMC Virtual High School allows you to customize your schedule to complete the course at your own pace. You have up to 4 months to complete the course at your own pace.

The final grade for this course will be determined as follows: 70% of the grade will be based on evaluations conducted throughout the course, including Assessment for Learning (AFL), Assessment as Learning (AAL), and Assessment of Learning (AOL). 30% of the grade will be based on a Final Culminating evaluation and administered towards the end of the course. You can log in to your course and learn at home at any time and at any pace.

Students are expected to complete their courses within 4 months of registration but are free to work at a faster pace.  

All credit courses, except for half credits (designed to have 55 planned instructional hours,) are designed to be 110 hours of planned instruction. Students are expected to come close to the planned hours of instruction timing within reason. Please check the attendance policy.

Once you log into the course (Moodle – course page), you will see from the left navigational toolbar, where the course units will be listed. By clicking on the name of each unit, you will reveal the individual lessons. The number of units depends on each course. A final grade is recorded for this course, and credit is granted and recorded for this course if the student’s grade is 50% or higher.

Seventy percent (70%) of the grade will be based on evaluations conducted throughout the course. This portion of the grade should reflect the student’s most consistent level of achievement throughout the course, although special consideration will be given to more recent evidence of achievement.

This evaluation will be based on evidence from one or a combination of the following: an examination, a performance, an essay, and/or another method of evaluation suitable to the course content. The final evaluation allows the student an opportunity to demonstrate comprehensive achievement of the overall expectations for the course.

Lessons are delivered in a wide variety of formats, such as written notes, recorded videos created by the teacher, external websites, online articles, discussion forums, and more.

A very important tool to familiarize yourself with is the internal messaging system. This can be access by clicking the envelop icon on the minibar. You can send a private message to communicate with your instructor or peers.

The evaluation will be based on evidence from one or a combination of the following: an examination, a performance, an essay, and/or another method of evaluation suitable to the course content. The final evaluation allows the student an opportunity to demonstrate comprehensive achievement of the overall expectations for the course.

Tests, Exams and Final Culminating Activities varies among the courses offered. When a student is ready to take an exam, they are required to contact their teacher by email so that the exam session can be arranged. On the day of the exam the administration of the test will be monitored on Zoom. Some unit tests in some courses will also follow this format.

All courses ‘will’ have FCE (Final Culminating Evaluations) which could be a final exam itself or a combination of project/exam. )

Student are required to ask for permission to take an FCE via email when they indicate that they are ready to do so. They  are required to follow all instructions to complete their FCE in a timely fashion and within the time allotted. This may be  monitored by the Moodle LMS  

Your teacher will grade your exam and submit your final grade approximately 5 days after your FCE report is submitted (this can vary depending on how much work has been submitted by the student toward the end of the course). The report card will then be generated and processed within 3 business days. Report cards will be sent to the student or their day schools.

Upon completion and request, we will mail a copy of the final report card to the day school on file, or send marks to OUAC, OCAS, or the university (101 applications). For students applying to post-secondary education, we can also send marks directly to OUAC, OCAS, or the university – in the case of 105 applications. 

At UMC Virtual High School, you have up to 4 months to complete the course at your own pace. When you have completed half of the course evaluations you will be eligible for midterm feedback (report card), and when you have completed all the course evaluations as well as the final culminating evaluations you will now be eligible for a final report card. Please refer to the Evaluation of Units chart (section 3) for the number of units that need to be completed for a midterm.

The OSSLT measures whether students are meeting the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. Successful completion of the literacy test is one of the requirements to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. All students across the province write this test.

The administration of the OSSLT will take place in October or March every year. Students who have been eligible to write the OSSLT at least twice, and were unsuccessful at least once, are eligible to take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course–OLC4O to fulfill the literacy requirement.

We organize the OSSLT test administration every year for students whose Ontario Student Record (OSR) is held in Toronto at the UMC High School Eglinton Campus. Students may also write the test at an alternative location in our affiliated partners ‘office outside of Canada. The test must be supervised by a suitable official who satisfies the requirements outlined by EQAO.

The fee for writing the test is US$500 per student. Please contact guidance@umchighschool.com with any inquiries regarding the OSSLT.

Please note that there are no refunds through UMC Virtual High School.

Moodle is an online Integrated Learning Platform and requires an internet connection to be accessed. In order to login and use the service your browser is required to have JavaScript and Cookies enabled. 

Furthermore desktops and laptops are required to have Adobe Flash Player 10.1, or greater, and Microsoft 2010 or later installed.
