How long does it take to do an online course?
UMC Virtual High School allows you to customize your schedule to complete the course at your own pace. You have up to 4 months to complete the course at your own pace.
The final grade for this course will be determined as follows: 70% of the grade will be based on evaluations conducted throughout the course, including Assessment for Learning (AFL), Assessment as Learning (AAL), and Assessment of Learning (AOL). 30% of the grade will be based on a Final Culminating evaluation and administered towards the end of the course. You can log in to your course and learn at home at any time and at any pace.
How does online learning work?
A number of units depends on each course. A final grade is recorded for this course, and a credit is granted and recorded for this course if the student’s grade is 50% or higher.
Seventy percent (70%) of the grade will be based on evaluations conducted throughout the course. This portion of the grade should reflect the student’s most consistent level of achievement throughout the course, although special consideration will be given to more recent evidence of achievement.
Thirty percent (30%) of the grade will be based on a final evaluation administered at or towards the end of the course. This evaluation will be based on evidence from one or a combination of the following: an examination, a performance, an essay, and/or another method of evaluation suitable to the course content. The final evaluation allows the student an opportunity to demonstrate comprehensive achievement of the overall expectations for the course.
How are the lessons delivered?
Lessons are delivered in a wide variety of formats, such as written notes, recorded videos created by the teacher, external websites, online articles, discussion forums, and more.
What is the best way to communicate with my teacher?
A very important tool to familiarize yourself with is the internal messaging system. This can be access by clicking the envelop icon on the minibar. You can send a private message to communicate with your instructor or peers.
When will I receive my final grade?
Your teacher will grade your exam and submit your final grade approximately 5 days after your FCE report is submitted (this can vary depending on how much work has been submitted by the student toward the end of the course). The report card will then be generated and processed within 3 business days. Report cards will be sent to the student or their day schools.
Will UMC Virtual High School send my marks to OUAC/OCAS or my day school?
Upon completion, we will automatically mail a copy of the final report card to the day school on file, or send marks to OUAC, OCAS, or to the university (101 applications). For students applying to post-secondary, we can also send marks directly to OUAC, OCAS, or to the university – in the case of 105 applicants.
How can I pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) graduation requirements?
The OSSLT measures whether students are meeting the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. Successful completion of the literacy test is one of the requirements to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. All students across the province write this test.
The administration of the OSSLT will take place in October or March every year. Students who have been eligible to write the OSSLT at least twice, and were unsuccessful at least once, are eligible to take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course–OLC4O to fulfill the literacy requirement.
We organize the OSSLT test administration every year for students whose Ontario Student Record (OSR) is held in Toronto at the UMC High School Eglinton Campus. Students may also write the test at an alternative location in our affiliated partners ‘office outside of Canada. The test must be supervised by a suitable official who satisfies the requirements outlined by EQAO.
The administration fee for writing the OSSLT test at Toronto UMC Virtual High School Eglinton campus is $250 per student. The fee for writing the test at an alternative location is $499 per student. Please contact guidance@umchighschool.com with any inquiries regarding the OSSLT.
